I've been a movie lover as long as I can remember (I think this is a family trait?). When I was in elementary school, our small town made a big step in accepting a movie theater development project. (To keep decent appearances, they stashed the theater under the freeway over pass down on the border of Montrose, close enough to be convenient but far enough to keep trouble out). My friends and I frequented this new and exciting La Canada United Artists theater as often as we could. It was a bold step of independence to get dropped off without parents for bagel dogs and a movie. It was in this time of life that I discovered and fell in love with Slurpees. Most specifically,
Sprite flavored Slurpees. Little. Sip. Of. Heaven.
It was perfect, sweet but not overwhelmingly fake like its Cherry flavored counterpart. Furthermore, the beloved Sprite Slurpee was white! No need to worry about staining lips or clothing while sipping in the dark.
I never realized how rare and special those Sprite Slurpees were. But over the last five years, I haven't been able to locate this slurpee anywhere. And I've been searching. (By the way, Sprite flavored SnoCone is not a suitable substitute...)
I've stopped by every slurpee and icee location in Utah and the Greater Salt Lake Valley. Nothing. On road trips through the Mountain West, I glance through the frozen drink counter of every gas station encountered. Still, nothing. I've scoured Boston, New York, Georgia and Florida. Coast to coast you'll find plenty of cherry, pina colada galore, even Mountain Dew nastiness. Don't these people know about the ONLY slurpee worth the calories and brain freeze?
I've had some accuse me that the Sprite Slurpee of yesteryear is just a figment of my imagination. Not so. A little web-searching has corroborated its existence.
Evidence:
- Nutritin facts - why list the facts if it doesn't exist?
- Official slurpee flavor list - scroll down, Sprite is there.
- Even the ever reliable Wiki lists it. In this case, Wiki counts
My web searching has produced only one tiny shred of hope. There is a website that tracks locations of various slurpee falvors. You can enter your address and the flavor you want to find and they'll show you where you've got to go to get the goods. The Sprite Slurpee closest to Provo:
4004 JEFFERSON AVEMIDLAND, MI 48640
Just wait Michigan.. I will find my way there eventually.
Oh how sweet it'll be!

You are insane. All that intense research about a slurpee! Well might as well start researching the Great Lakes Marathon -- surely that exists and could be your ticket to Michigan.
Oh my gosh that's a fantastic idea!!!
I was sitting at a MOPS group the other morning (Mother's of Preschoolers), and we were in a small discussion group. One of the questions was to list things we like about ourselves and things we could change. I insisted that we had to start with what we liked first. One of the girls was really struggling, but then she finally said, "Well, my husband tells me I'm pretty good at researching stuff. It comes in handy sometimes."
I didn't really understand how that could be so fulfilling or time consuming. I think I kind of get it now. It is an actual skill. And you possess it, Rachel.
If I find Sprite slurpees in Portland will you come visit me sooner rather than later? I'm going to start a search.
that was awesome. serously. awesome.
Suggestion: Once you obtain your fairy-tale Slurpee, you should compliment it with the perfect location.
Janis and I hope to talk to you soon, we want to showcase G&G and ask a lot of "what if" tax questions in regards to our relocation.
that is a great post! I miss that movie theater along with a bagel dog.. yum- I want one now.
I am also a HUGE slurpee fan. When I was pregnant that is all I ever wanted.
Thanks for the comment about Prop 8. I saw people writing to you on facebook. It is just so important and I don't think people realize.
I definitely remember those wonderful Sprite slurpees and longingly look towards any slurpee machine I pass just in hopes that one day that wonderful flavor will be back in my life. I would be happy to join you on a trip to Michigan for Sprite slurpees.
You're funny, Rachel. And so totally nerdy, which I love.
By the way, how do you know Hanner (Hannah)? Eliza, her sister, who has an amazing blog is a very close friend of mine out here.
There are Sprite-flavored slushies at the Circle K here in Colorado Springs. Ben is addicted to frozen drinks. Come visit any time. They seem to always have that flavor-at least for the last year or so. Also, Ben says they are quite comparable to slurpees.
It is a week after you posted this Slurpee blog. That means it is October 21 and your birthday!! I just wanted to leave this note wishing you a happy one, with all my heart.
Love, Mom
You see that good old Wisconsin is right there by Michigan. Be sure to stop and visit on your way to get your slurpee.
P.S. Happy Birthday!
