I need you to complete the following statement:
If I did not have to work* full-time today I would _______________ .

I fully realize I am in a unique period of life where I have very little to do. Unfortunately I'm running low on ideas. The most exciting thing I did today was buy bread at Great Harvest. And gas at Chevron. And exercise. And listen to Oprah's Best Life podcast. Studying for the CPA exam often does feel like a full-time job, but there's still room to squeeze in whatever else I want. I'm trying to take full advantage of the next 6 weeks before I start working.
I want your suggestion, I want to know what YOU would do. Because maybe I want to do that too. So give me an idea. (And ask your neighbor to give me an idea too!) I'll do it, and report back.
*Obviously, raising children is full-time work. And so is school. Etc.
But what should I do?

The funny thing is, I AM in your exact situation, and I feel the exact same way! I am almost WORRYING about not "doing" enough during this time that I will regret "wasting" it when I am back to work in October.
So far, I have sold all my textbooks on amazon, read 3 or 4 leisure books from my list, watched movies I love, hung out with old friends I have neglected throughout school, got long over-due maintenance on our cars, done A LOT of family history work, gone to the temple more often, gone shopping, visited my grandparents, gone swimming and running, cooked a lot more, tried to figure out how to coupon like a pro (and failed), cleaned my house 20 times, and that's about all I've come up with. However, I am NOT complaining. I still have yet to be bored. I LOVE having all of this free-time!!!
Let me know if you think of anymore great ideas!
Thanks Laura! Yeah so far I've been happy with how I've spent my time. But I'm worried I'll get to the end and wish I had done something else that I currently can't think of. You've given me some more great ideas!
(I'm imagining this day with Steve)
If I did not have to work full-time today I would attend the temple in the morning with Steve (you could do baptisms if you're interested).
Next, we would either walk or bike ride to a farmers' market and purchase a couple pieces of fruit and one other special farmers' market item.
After that, we would set out our picnic blanket under a tree in an empty park, eat our farmer food, and read for hours. My choice of book would be something spiritual that lifts my soul.
In the evening, we would go out for Indian, Thai, or Japanese food, and come home to play a game together.
Ken just said, "I would go to the grocery store and stock up on water at costco."
I think that makes clear what he hopes I'll get done today. :-)
hit golf balls at the driving range
see a matinee
go to the pool
write in my novel
go through my clothes and get rid of a lot
make out
make out
sleep in
cook something good
talk to friends long distance
spend time with the man, friends, and/or fam
Thanks Maigen, I love that list. I'll work on these and report back (as appropriate ;-) )
Oh my gosh I definitely would not go to the grocery store and costco!! I would probably go to a matinee movie, get a smoothie and a pedicure. But you've probably done all that already.
I think you should put together a cookbook of all your favorite recipes and make copies for all your sisters. Also include your notes about substitutions, cooking technics, etc.
Then post mom & dad's old appliances and furniture on craigslist and ksl and help them sell it.
I would most definitely create something. With a whole day off I would sew. But if sewing isn't your craft, I would just want to make something. Try a technique, anything new and scary, that I was afraid of, and then make it great and beautiful. The process of creating something beautiful is addictive and so very, very rewarding. And what you learn along the way is invaluable. That's what I would do.
P.S. But the cookbook idea is dynamite. And would even qualify under a creative pursuit. Not only would it be a cookbook, but it could be a beautiful cookbook complete with photos, etc. Then you would have your Christmas presents all ready to go by the end of September!
A full, huge, complete overhaul of my recipe notebook is already underway, so figuring out a way to share it with you two won't be too hard.
I am struggling to find a cute way to do it... with the explosion of design and home design there still isn't a really darling recipe file around. Something involving letterpress would be nice. But it still needs to be functional (recipes must be removable and able to be edited and protected in plastic) so I've got a way to go before I figure it out but I'm working on it. Thanks!
IeLi your idea sounds completely delightful. I've got that penciled in for Saturday. Thanks for your advice!
If I were in Utah, I would drive up to Bear Lake past Logan and get a rasberry milkshake. Then I would hike the Y because I've never done that before. I think I'd also go to Promontory Point and see the golden spike. I'd also go to that really good chinese place on Bountiful. I think I might also go to a Bees game.
If my boss swung by my cube right now and sent me home to enjoy life outside the office I would head strait to one the theaters that is showing the limited release of "The September Issue" which is a documentary about Anna Wintour and her control of the fashion industry. After that I would drive around town hitting up all of the cool vintage/ resale shops that seem to only open their doors from 10 am- 5 or 6 pm. Sometimes they're even closed Saturdays; how am I ever supposed to shop there? If possible I would drop in for an afternoon cake decorating class possibly at a Sur La Table or a similar venue. I feel like I have some real potential in the cake decorating space but have yet to figure out how to blend that with corporate finance. Probably not something worth losing any sleep over though. Oh, and most importantly I would book plane flights for all the trips I plan on taking after the Disney budget process is over. I always need things to look forward to!
i would stay in my pajamas and read blogs. oh wait. that's what i do all the time because i'm unemployed.
i might splurge and shower to go get paint samples and picture frames. might.
and whoa ie li! she is in my sister's ward. hi ie li.
