Welcoming Christmas

My blogging habits are so strange. Often very notable events go un-blogged (what happened to the rest of my birthday? and Thanksgiving? and Special Steak event 2008?) And then things like Chinese Fire Drills get the front page for over a week. If you've done something amazing for/with me, and it isn't on the blog, don't take it personally. There's no logic.

I will, however, mention the first official Christmas activity of the season. Kirstin and I went up to Salt Lake for a wreath making class. It was taught by a very old, scruffy man who also made jalapeno jelly for us to eat. (You could leave him your phone number for the recipe. He clarified the jelly was made by him, not his wife.)
You can see the back side of our teacher over Kirstin's shoulder there...

It was a bit of a challenge getting all the greens to sit in the right places. It's also hard to remember that it doesn't have to look perfect all along the way, just get it all wired on there and adjust/plump later. Of course the hardest part for me was deciding how exactly to accessorize the wreath once I was done putting it together. (Something about my strength being recognizing good design, not necessarily coming up with it from scratch...)

In the end, I like how my wreath turned out. Even with it's unevenness and oddities. I'm glad we did something to try to override the stress and anxiety of this end of the year time. I wonder how long it will take me post-college to separate the stress of finals from Christmas. Because they have been closely knit in my life for the last 6 years.

Must get back to schoolwork. Merry Christmas!

That is so awseome that you went and took a class about it! I think it turned out beautiful. We are our own worst critique in crafting creations as well.

I surely hope you left your phone number with the old guy and the jalapeno jelly recipe. Seriously? Did you even try it? What do you put jalapeno jelly on?

You do the coolest things! And I love your wreath.

I do the opposite with my posts, I sometimes have funny random things come up and want to blog about them and then I end up holding on until I have some big significant event and then I don't post about the funny little thing I was originally going to post about. But whatever you blog about, it's fabulous!

Yes the jelly is made from green and jalapeno peppers along with whatever substance jelly-i-fies it. He had crackers and cream cheese for us to spread the jelly on. He also baked peppermint chip cookies.

Those green things on my wreath are called Osage oranges, which he drove into the forest and gathered himself. It was quite odd.

Wow what a crafty old man. How did you hear about the wreath-making class? I miss having roommates who enjoy a festively decorated home. Or a decorated home at all. The wreaths look fabulous.

Also, the stress of finals vanishes immediately after graduation. Keep in touch with your friends still in school and maybe edit a paper or two around that time to remind yourself how happy you are to not be in school and facing finals. Denial about the approaching busy season at work will also be neccessary to learn to enjoy the holidays in post-school life.

I love your wreath, those green balls are super cute. Lime green makes me smile. I can't wait for our flower arranging class! I am so stoked to go home to my Mom's sweet Christmas decorations. When do you leave for Frankfurt?
