It seems like everyone is getting their stores organized and ready.
I have my own theories of what sort of "disaster" would cause food storage to be necessary (more along the lines of mass inflation rather than mass flooding)...
I like the idea, the planning, the organization, the labeling, the spreadsheets, the recipes, etc... And I look forward to implementing a plan of my own.
But can I really have food storage, in my present life state? Should I fill my little bedroom with excess Costco goods, even though I will only live here for another 6 (or so) months? Or should I wait til I'm in a more settled state?
If a disaster struck tomorrow (not likely) I would be forced to turn to the goodwill of others (hello Wileys?) which isn't right.
But what IS right? Ahh I'm getting nervous...

Maybe you should help us work on our food storage first, then that would be a fine plan. For all the thought and intention I've given it over the years I really don't have much to speak of.
Peace of mind could come in a 72-hour kit. Remember when you were all determined to make those for everyone. I would start with that. That is very practical for you current stage of life.
BTW, BYU has food storage for all of it's current students. You fall under their umbrella right now, so you are actually taken care of.
Helping Sarah would also be a good plan.
Last night for dinner I microwaved pepperonis with cheese on top because it was pretty much the only food in my apartment. My food storage doesn't last past a single work week. My only plan in the face of an emergency is to make it to my parent's house in Draper where they have food for me to eat for a year. It's flawless. There are no holes in my plan.
You're right Annee, a 72-hour kit would help quite a bit.
Although it's hard-ish for me to get as excited about that idea since my vision of the kind of emergency that will require food storage isn't one that would require a triage kit. But I should finally get a kit put together nonetheless.
Seriously I mean where would you put it all. I am such a slacker and need to get on the band wagon. But that's all we have is the 72 hour kits...so we would be stuck after that amount of time. But I agree with you, I mean in this economy it's common to live on the food storage. I need to get on it and get ours together! Your post was a good reminder!
Hi Rachel,
I'd recommend the following: buy 30 cans of dinty moore stew and keep them somewhere in your closet with a can opener. My scout experience has taught me you can eat it straight out of the can.
You will have 30 days worth of food if things really get bad. And it will last since you're not likely to eat it any other time.
I'm in to food storage too... we have 3+ months worth of Arrowhead water stored up, 1 case of tuna fish, 2 of the Church food storage "starter kits" and 2 big cans of something... milk and rice I think. Though I have no idea how to eat wheat in a disaster.
If you get Grandma Z's gruel recipe, please share it.
love,
Zack
I'm inspired by all of your comments. It seems in conference lately whenever they mention emergency storage it always includes a savings account. We can see why.
