10 Things I'd Like to Learn How to Do...
- How to identify Vivaldi's pieces by sound.
Remember the awesome dinner concerts in Salzburg CZ & parents? - How to figure out the day of the week for any date, past, present or future.
- How to make Kettle Corn.
(Thanks Liz for the tips! Sarah/Brendo where's that YouTube video?) - How to get better at writing thank you notes.
- How to make my hair look good on the non-wash days.
5b. Furthermore, how to make my hair hold a curl. - How to make crepes as delicious as Zack's Tahitian friend Amira.
(Family, remember those at beach week? Is canned butter the key?) - How to pick the right baking sheet.
What is the precise impact a cookie sheet will have on the cookies baked? Which is best? Airbake? Silicone? Baking sheets with rimmed edges? Gold plated? - How to ballroom dance correctly.
Maybe this will be another thing I add to my "retirement activities" list. Have you see the movie Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dance & Charm School? Based in Pasadena actually. Love it. - How to make my light switches work.
There are two. I've tested every single plug in the room as well as the overhead chandelier to see if the switches actually control anything. They do not. They are purely decoration at this point. Ridic. - How to correctly decipher matters of the heart.
I would like to add a couple more because when I originally made my list I thought the prompt was "10 Things You'd Like to Learn" so the items I listed didn't quite fit the "how-to" model, but are still relevant to me.
More Things I Would Like to Learn...
- Revolutionary War history.
I've read John Adams and 1776 but I wish I really understood the whole timeline better. - Succession of French kings.
I've learned it once but can never remember. Watching The Other Boleyn Girl, and reading the other books in the series, make me wish I had it down better in my head. - How airline pricing models work.
Tickets range so drastically, how do they figure? - Where to find the best Mexican food in DC.
Someone please help me... - Why In n Out burgers are so good.
Scott remember that recipe you found? Meat, lettuce, tomato, sauce, bun. Hah - How, specifically, my life would be better without cookies.
- Whether my social security card was sold to an illegal immigrant last year when stolen.
Which reminds me I need to tell you my stories from the VITA lab this year.. All sorts of people using all sorts of Social Security numbers that are not theirs. Makes me so frustrated!!! - Why the water in Arlington smells so terribly of chlorine and what can be done to fix it.

I have just 3 comments. First, you said "All sorts of people using all sorts of Social Security numbers that are not theirs. Makes me so frustrated!!!" Illegal workers are a frustration, but not the SS deductions. Do you know how much money the SS collects each year, that they will never have to pay on? The worker needs the card to get hired. The SS money gets deducted. But being a false card they never receive the payout. It is a big way that the illegals contribute to tax-supported services and a windfall for SS.
Secondly, the bogus light switches remind me of plugs we had that worked randomly, until we found a switch controlling them in another room. They were weird.
Third, how about Civil War History? Seems you are in a great spot for that.
This is a very comprehensive list. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I keep thinking, "I'm about to post mine", and then, it's already Friday. I say I'll cut my losses and look ahead!
But really, how does one narrow down what one wants to learn to just the top 10?! The list in my mind seems never ending.
P.S. Did you see the guest on Dave Letterman once, who was this guy who had the skill you just mentioned. Dave would ask him what day of the week a particular event took place, and within seconds, he was telling him the answer. It was crazy. I didn't know you could "learn" that. What if you did?
Really, don't invest too much time on the cookie issue. I think it will lead to no good. NO GOOD! Life isn't better without cookies. And anyone who says it is, they are lying. Or just very sad.
Wow. That is a very unique and creative list. French kings? You went the extra mile with the bonus items. WTG Makes me want to think of a few more. Thanks for participating.
Impressive list, Rachel. You make me want to add to (or rewrite) my list as well. I'm with Annee on finding it very difficult to narrow the list down to just 10 things, and realize that even more after reading your post. And canned butter?.. Didn't know there was such a thing. Is it really even edible? I guess they must make everything available in a can. Gross.
I feel the same way about Beethoven as you do about Vivaldi. Our little library here has biographies that include audio cd's of his music. Knowing what was going on in his life and what was influencing why he wrote what he did when he did it, makes quite the impression. The music begins more personal and somehow more recognizable.
The am interested in the history of the English ruling class. Reading your list reminds me why I think you are so fun to talk to.
Mom I agree that working illegal immigrants help take care of the social security windfall. But it is sad to see the impact on the people whose numbers are used. One man was supposed to get a big refund in 2008 but instead the IRS came to him with a big bill. Someone had been using his social security number to work so when he filed his taxes (with only the W-2s for the jobs he worked) the IRS found him to be under-reporting his income (for the W-2s and income received by the false user of his number) and figured he owed major tax. That's not really ok.
Annee post a list! Even if you don't make it up til Thursday. Or Friday. Do it!
And yeah, canned butter is a real thing! The Tahitian brought it with her so the crepes would turn out just right. Canned butter in your food storage may be a great bargaining tool when people are desperate for cookies at the end of the world.
I am laughing out loud, "when people are desperate for cookies at the end of the world."
I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, perhaps Tahiti doesn't know the gold mine it is sitting upon. It should start exporting it's canned butter to the Mormons world wide!
I needed to correct myself.
Darling, the key to good hair on non-wash days is TIGI's Rockaholic Dry Shampoo. It's the most fabulous thing I've ever discovered, and as a fellow blond I understand why non-wash days can be so questionable.
Ok, I just read over this list quickly, and thought the last word on #2 on your second list read "kissing". Wow;)
I'll see what I can find out about a GOOD Mexican restaurant
Rachel, you are a few days past April 15. When's the new post coming?
If you figure out 5b, "how to make your hair hold a curl" let me know! My hair also refuses to hold a curl which has bugged me since the beginning of time :)
Also, thanks for your comment on my blog! I am sure the accounting program is great, because its one of the programs BYU is renowned for! But I just don't think I can do it! I agree though that the business applications are so helpful to know for everyday life, that is why I took Acc 200 and why I did find it interesting, because I learned SO much about things I have never understood before. (My Econ class a couple semesters ago made me read the Wall Street Journal for a 1 pg paper every week, and I guarantee if I had taken Acc 200 first I would've been much better at understanding the things I was actually reading!) I just am too in love with my Exercise Science major to give it up :) But maybe I'll take 210 just to see... who knows haha. I'd have to really fall in love though to switch my major this late in the game though! It would take forever to start all over.
hi! so about the dress: i have a few cardigans that i plan on pairing with it (i haven't worn it out yet). the few i have are thinner and lighter weight, almost see-through. they are shorter too (not like a shrug, but definitely not long). i still feel like you see shape with a cardigan, at least one that is fitted. you can still see the cute detail from the front, which is all i really care about! anyway, that's all i do with it. nothing fancy. good luck!
